Youth Leadership and Community Day: A journey of storytelling, land-based learning, and connection.
About the Event
On February 21, X Helping Hands organized the Belonging on the Land: Youth Leadership and Community Day, bringing together community members for a day of storytelling, land-based learning, and connection.
We started the day with an opening circle, welcoming everyone and setting the tone for connection and learning. Elder Joe began by sharing stories and wisdom, followed by Elder Terry, who joined us from Chapel Island, bringing his perspective and guidance.
We then headed out for a guided hike, where storytelling and reflection were woven into our walk, helping us connect with the land and each other. Along the way, we came together at Wooden Pizza Community, where we shared a meal and heard stories from Jennifer, the owner of Fireloch, about her journey and community experiences.
Later, Elder Terry showed us his woodworking craftsmanship, sharing stories and demonstrating skills that connect culture, tradition, and creativity. Participants had the chance to learn about land-based knowledge, reconciliation, and Indigenous practices throughout the day.
The event was designed especially for community members from rural Nova Scotia, with a focus on BIPOC participants, creating a safe space for sharing, learning, and belonging. Conversations, laughter, and storytelling helped strengthen connections and inspire reflection.
Snowy, our special guest dog, joined in on the fun, bringing joy and energy to the gathering. By the end of the day, we left feeling inspired, grounded, and more connected—to the land, to each other, and to our shared stories.
This event reminded us of the power of community, storytelling, and creating inclusive spaces where everyone can learn, grow, and lead together.
