Storyteller: Gagan (he/ him)

My name is Gagan, and I was born in Ambala, Haryana, India. Ambala is a city with a rich cultural history and a close-knit community, known for its lively streets and vibrant traditions. Growing up in such a place shaped my values and gave me a strong sense of community, which I’ve carried with me throughout my life. In 2019, I made the decision to move to Canada on a study visa to pursue higher education, seeking new opportunities that would help me grow both personally and professionally.

I enrolled at Lambton College in Sarnia, Ontario, where I completed my studies. Living in Sarnia was my first experience of being away from home, and while it came with its own challenges, I managed to adapt. After finishing my program, I transitioned to a work permit, and in the fall of 2023, I moved to Antigonish, Nova Scotia. This was a big move for me, as I left behind the familiar environment of Sarnia to start fresh in a smaller town. Since then, I’ve been living in Antigonish and working as a team member at a local food business. It’s a job that has allowed me to connect with people in the community and settle into life here.

However, moving to Antigonish wasn’t without its difficulties. The cold weather, especially during winter, was one of the first challenges I had to face, as it was very different from the warm climate I was used to in Ambala. Finding housing in a small town like Antigonish was also tough. There aren’t many options, and with the high demand, securing a place to live was a bit of a struggle. On top of that, adjusting to the slower pace of life compared to the busier city life I knew took some getting used to. At first, I felt a bit isolated and missed the sense of community I had back home and in Sarnia, but I eventually made friends in this town.

Despite these challenges, the people of Antigonish have been incredibly welcoming and supportive. The community here has helped me in more ways than I expected. Whether it was advice on housing or simply friendly conversations that made me feel more connected, the warmth of the people has been one of the highlights of my experience. My workplace has also been a great support system, offering me stability and an opportunity to integrate into the town’s life. I meet students from StFX, community members of Antigonish, and from nearby towns at my workplace, who love the food we serve.

Local organizations and programs have provided resources and connections that made the transition smoother. I was able to meet others who had gone through similar experiences, which helped me feel less alone. Over time, I’ve built a small but meaningful network of friends and colleagues who have made Antigonish feel like home. While the initial challenges were significant, the support I received has been invaluable in helping me adjust and build a life here.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about what the future holds. Antigonish has become a place where I not only work but also feel a sense of belonging. Canada has given me opportunities I never imagined, and I’m eager to continue growing both personally and professionally in this new chapter of my life.
